Your Biometric Verification Number (BVN) also referred to as Bank Verification number has become a major security code to all the bank accounts in Nigeria. The major reason for its introduction is to checkmate excesses in the financial sector and prevent frauds. The BVN equally helps those with multiple accounts to operate all the accounts with a single security coding. With your BVN you can conveniently open bank accounts with any bank in Nigeria and simply link your BVN to the bank account.
BVN was introduced in late 2013 and became compulsory in 2014 that every bank account holder in Nigeria should register for BVN based on the purpose it is meant to achieve. Based on the new CBN directive, all the banks in Nigeria proceeded in compulsory registration of its customers in the BVN database in order to get their BVN respectively. This action recorded huge success as well as high level of turn out from Nigerians who also want their bank account to be safe.
Currently almost 90 percent of bank accounts in all the Nigerian banks have been linked to the BVN of their respective owners. Those with bank accounts from different banks have all the bank account assigned to a single BVN owned by the person.
Despite the success, little had been said to cover the interest of Nigerians in diaspora. Statistics showed that over 40 percent of Nigeria population are based abroad. And majority of these population have bank accounts in Nigeria, since the CBN policy mandates every account to have BVN, there is need to make a provision for the Nigerian population abroad to register their BVN irrespective of their country of resident.
Based on such initiative, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) has made provision for Nigerians abroad to register their BVN in their respective country of resident. In line with that, a list of locations in each country has been provided for Nigerians to visit and get yur UBA account registered with BVN. The major good thing about this easy way of getting your BVN despite dwelling in foreign land is the ability to link that BVN to other bank accounts you own within and outside Nigeria.
